St. Joseph’s Hill Secondary School (SJHSS) in Kyembogo, Kyarusozi is proud to celebrate a remarkable act of generosity and global solidarity that has greatly enriched the lives of our students through sports.
During the past summer, Mr. Chris Haug, Provincial Assistant and Director of Apostolic Mission & Charism for the Congregation of Holy Cross in the United States, visited several Holy Cross ministry sites across Uganda. Accompanying him was his son, Joshua Haug, a dedicated varsity soccer player at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania (USA).
While visiting SJHSS, Joshua joined some of our students in a casual football match. He was deeply moved to discover that many of our students played barefoot or in worn-out sandals due to a lack of proper sports equipment. This experience inspired him to take action.
Upon returning to the United States, Joshua mobilized his fellow athletes and community at Cardinal O’Hara High School and successfully raised over $700 USD in support of our students. In a beautiful show of solidarity, the Holy Cross Mission Center matched this effort with additional contributions from generous benefactors, resulting in a total donation of $3,500 USD to St. Joseph’s Hill.
These funds were used to purchase new sports uniforms, cleats, shoes, socks, balls, nets, and tracksuits for our football, volleyball, netball, and basketball teams. This investment has transformed our athletic program—providing dignity, safety, and opportunity to young people who are eager to participate in both school and inter-school competitions.
Previously, players faced challenges such as having only one uniform, making it difficult to maintain hygiene and performance, especially during busy sports calendars. The addition of spare gear now enables our teams to rotate uniforms, remain clean, and perform confidently.
We are sincerely grateful to Joshua Haug, the Cardinal O’Hara Soccer Team, the Holy Cross Mission Center, and the many benefactors who made this dream a reality. Your kindness has not only equipped our students with the tools to excel but also reminded them that they are part of a wider, caring Holy Cross family that believes in their potential.
