Upgrading for Excellence: St. Joseph’s Hill SSS Renovates Original Dormitories

St. Joseph’s Hill Senior Secondary School (SJHSS) in Kyembogo, Kyarusozi, continues to invest in the dignity and well-being of its students through significant infrastructure upgrades. After successfully opening new boys’ and girls’ dormitories in 2023—raising the school’s boarding capacity to 600—the administration prioritized renovating the original dormitory blocks to align with the high standards set by the new facilities.

Located in the rural heart of Uganda, SJHSS currently serves 545 students through a values-based, holistic Catholic education rooted in the mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Restoring the Heart of Student Life

Renovations to the original boys’ and girls’ dormitories commenced immediately after the academic year closed on December 3, 2023. A dedicated team of 50 skilled contractors and technicians carried out comprehensive improvements including:

  • Roof and ceiling repairs

  • Floor replacement and wall treatment

  • Upgraded electrical installations

  • Improved drainage systems

  • Exterior painting and landscaping

All work was completed on time for the reopening of school on February 4, 2024, ensuring minimal disruption to the academic calendar.

A Transformed Student Experience

Students previously housed in the older dormitories were welcomed back with a pleasant surprise—a completely transformed living space that now matches the standard of the new facilities. The upgrade has not only boosted morale but has significantly enhanced the living and learning environment on campus.

As a result of both its improved infrastructure and sustained academic success, St. Joseph’s Hill SSS has been ranked #449 out of 3,350 secondary schools nationwide by the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports—a remarkable achievement for a rural school.

Enrollment numbers reflect this growing reputation: 150 new Senior One students (equivalent to 9th Grade or Freshman Year in the U.S.) joined the school in 2024, an increase of 83 students from the previous year.
